Protests: An American Value

To the editor:

I read with interest the recent Letter to the Editor titled Shameful Spectacle. The writer criticized small gatherings of citizens protesting here in Leelanau County. These neighbors are not complaining about a “stolen election”. They understand, as in 2020, the election was free and fair. Their concern is the erosion of democracy since then.

We see efforts to concentrate executive power, weaken the Department of Justice, sanitize history, control the media and erode due process. Project 2025 has provided the blueprint for many of these troubling changes. My civics classes taught me that the founders valued the checks and balances that preserve liberty.
