Tower proposal irks neighbors

Is cell service a luxury or necessity in Empire Township? That was a question posed during a special Empire Township Planning Commission meeting Tuesday night.

The very well attended meeting was held in order to hear comments from the public about proposed amendments to the Empire Township Zoning Ordinance.

The amendments were prompted by a request from Vertical Bridge, the largest private owner and operator of communications towers in the nation, to change the ordinance in order to allow the construction of a cell tower in Section 20 of the township, located off of M-72. Currently the ordinance only allows for construction of communications towers in Section 22. Along with that amendment, the planning commission also aimed to approve changes to Zoning Ordinance section 5.3 to include language that designates all towers as special land uses.
