Grab the popcorn and don’t forget the candy.

The Frankfort Film Festival returns for the 17th time at The Garden theater October 15-19, featuring 14 award-winning films and documentaries.

“It’s a really fun fall event here in Frankfort. A whole community comes out for it. Main street is lit up and people are going in and out of shops and restaurants and in the theater,” Frankfort Film Festival director Katie Jones said.

There will be drinks, light hors d’oeuvres, and good vibes at the non-profit Garden Theater for six days and six nights from noon to 8 p.m. with films being show every two hours and 30 minutes.

Jones says this is the big event of the year that helps keeps the lights on for the non-profit theater.

“We’ve become a fully functioning performing arts venue, but it is still our biggest grossing event of the year. We have quite the audience to come out for all of these films,” she said. “Supporting film festivals like ours is essential for a single screen art house theater. It is how we are able to keep, you know, the heat on and the lights on in the middle of winter when there’s less people in town.”

The Frankfort Film Festival festures over a dozen award winning films including one that was shot right in northern Michigan.

Sunfish and other stories on Green Lake is an anthology following the residents of a small town and the lake that binds them together. This film was shot and produced on the Intelrochen Arts academy campus, Green Lake, and Northport in Leelanau County, to name the significant contributions, according to co-producer and Frankfort Film Festival marketing driector Nick Loud.

“It was all shot and produced here in Northern Michigan,” he said.
