This continues a series adapted from the book, “A Port Oneida Collection,” Volume 1 of the twopart set, “Oral History, Photographs, and Maps from the Sleeping Bear Region,” produced by Tom Van Zoeren in partnership with Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear. Here we continue with a look at the old Frederick & Margretha Werner Farm, at the end of Miller Road:
This is the second house on the farm, built in 1914, viewed looking southeast. It was right about where the turn-around is at the end of the road now. Note how the orchard surrounded it. The barn and granary are seen behind the orchard. The hill beyond is the one they had to go over to get in and out before Miller Road was established.
Charlie Miller (junior) remembered the tragic end of this house in 1941: “We were planting potatoes that day, and we were down at the beach except for my mother and her mother. We looked up over the hill to see a bunch of smoke coming up.”
