The story behind the art

For Elmwood Township resident Janelle Couturier Dahlberg, the process and story behind an art project is just as important as the final product itself.

As a process artist and creative, Dahlberg finds inspiration and motivation before, during, and after she finishes any art project that she’s working on — and she can be found working on various projects at most times of the year. Art has been a passion of hers since she was a child, and as she’s grown older, has helped her communicate in ways she never thought she could.

First attending and graduating from Northwestern Michigan College to study art, she later went on to attend Michigan State University to earn her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She learned about painting and sculpture and also how to assemble and build everything she would need to make a piece entirely on her own — from building the structure for the canvas down to the art application. Truly a labor of love, Dahlberg’s focus and attention to precise details from start to finish during the creative process is part of the reason why she still loves doing art today.
