Leland Township approved fire department purchases totaling up to $216,000 at its regular meeting on Oct. 13.
The first item the township took action on was to approve authorization for the fire department’s purchase of a new LUCAS (Chest Compression Device) from Stryker for a price not to exceed $21,000. Captain Chase Schelling explained how it would allow them to arrive on the scene of a cardiac arrest patient using the automated CPR device to deliver continuous chest compressions, giving paramedics more time to do things like administer medications and start IVs. The fire department’s original LUCAS monitor purchased in 2014 is at the end of its life and needs to be replaced.
“As it (the monitor) sits right now, it functions, but if even anything minor occurred, we’re going to be unable to have it repaired or work with it any longer,” Schelling said at the meeting. “So we have the opportunity to replace that while the current model still has value and they’re giving us $3,000 to trade in for that device.”
