Eagles excited for chess club
The St. Mary School Chess Club, led by coaches Brendan Mullane and Joe LaCross (from left), oversee tournament play as the teams competed in the championship round. Sixth grader, Louie LaCross came away with the win.

Lake Leelanau St. Mary continues the tradition of playing chess when the season begins in November.

“I like chess so much because it makes you plan ahead and strategize … I usually like attacking more,” St. Mary fifth grader Blaise Bean said. “I would like to learn a few more plays or strategies this year. I would also like to do some tournaments … I like that I get to play chess with my friends.”

This will be the third year of the current iteration of the club, which is mostly for elementary students, while middle school chess enthusiasts also have the chance to master the board.
