John Elchert, Blackbird Newspapers COO and former publisher of the Leelanau Enterprise, announces his retirement after nearly 44 years in the newspaper industry. “It has been a wild ride over the last four decades. I’ve dedicated my career to local journalism and providing important coverage to the communities in which I have lived and worked. Newspapers play a vital role in our community. I’ve been blessed to work with some wonderful, dedicated people over the years. Together I believe we have made a difference in our communities, keeping them informed and enlightened.
The role of media has never been more important than it is today, especially in small markets. I am proud of the work that our newspapers have done and will continue to do. It truly has been a privilege working with great people over the years in some wonderful communities.”
Elchert has served on press association boards of directors in several states and recently completed his term as president and past president of the Michigan Press Association.
