With or without the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits being paused on Saturday, Mary Stanton, Leelanau Christian Neighbors (LCN) executive director, said they will still be here to serve and help the people that come to them in need of food.
“Hopefully it’s not going to be paused for long, but if it is, we’ll make sure that we’re able to take care of them,” Stanton said. “Food insecurity is a reality here in Leelanau County.”
On Oct. 23, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) received communication from the federal government’s Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) to temporarily pause November SNAP benefits until further notice for approximately 42 million individuals across the country due to the “ongoing federal government funding lapse.”
