LEELANAU HISTORY

5 YEARS AGO November 5, 2020

Record high voter turnout across the U.S. and Michigan was reflected Tuesday in Leelanau County with 79.42% of the county’s 21,418 registered voters casting ballots in the general election. According to the county’s top election official, county clerk Michelle Crocker, the most remarkable record set in the general election was the number of absent voter (AV) ballots cast. Of the 17,010 ballots cast, 9,290 were AV ballots, some 54 percent of the total. *** The fate of the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners was balanced on a knife’s edge the morning after the Nov. 3 general election. A two-vote difference in the unofficial results posted early Wednesday morning separated two candidates and could change the majority of commissioners on the county board from Republican to Democrat.
