Northport resident Tricia Fortin competed and finished in her first marathon, the Chicago marathon last month.

“Early on in the race, I turned this corner and suddenly I was on the street surrounded by all these people cheering so madly,” Fortin said. “It felt like I was in a parade because the Bears had just won the Super Bowl or something.”

Fortin, who is originally from central Indiana and moved up to Leelanau County in 2019 started running four years ago and had built herself up as a runner but still didn’t feel she needed to run a marathon. This was until she saw other people complete a marathon and liked the thought of the challenge, in addition to using it as a fundraising opportunity for Still I Run, a mental health organization that advocated running for mental health.
