Those driving along M-22 in Elmwood Township are anticipated to have a much smoother ride going from Leelanau County into Traverse City in the weeks ahead.
A ribbon cutting event hosted by Elmwood Township to celebrate the completion of the Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) $25.8 million project to rebuild a 2.2mile section of M-72 (Grandview Parkway) and M-22 (Bay Shore Drive) from US-31 (Division Street) in Traverse City to Cherry Bend Road in Elmwood Township was held on Friday morning. Invited guests, including state and federal legislators like former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and MDOT’s Director Bradley Wieferich, as well as local representatives, attended the event.
“We’re so excited. This has totally transformed the corridor here in Elmwood Township. I’ve been working on this for six years with MDOT. The new trail makes it safe, accessible, it’s going to be great for everybody,” said Jeff Shaw, Elmwood Township supervisor. “The businesses have been awesome all year long. It’s been a tough summer for them, but they all understand that ultimately, it’s going to be so great for everybody… The roundabout seems to be functioning awesome. It was a real pain for everybody all summer, but like I said it’s totally transformed.”
