Indigenous recipes are highlighted at least once a month in school lunches at Northport Public School thanks to a new initiative that aims to share tradition and culture of Indigenous people in the community.
Northport Public School Superintendent Neil Wetherbee said similar to Suttons Bay Public School, they have a Title VI committee, or Native American Parent Committee, which operates through the federal government’s Indian education program. The committee is made up of Native American parents and meets at least once a year as a group.
Wetherbee said the committee met last year in May, and one of the parents, Emily Miller, who happens to be the district’s food service director, communicated the need to look for ways to do things authentically and to integrate Indigenous culture. Her idea: to spread tradition and culture of Native people to all by featuring an Indigenous recipe on their lunch menu every month. Wetherbee said the lunch initiative happened naturally, adding that he’s only heard good things about the food served.
