Although Garth Greenan lost his election bid for a six-year seat on the Leelanau County Road Commission last week, he was appointed to a two-year seat on the commission this week. At a special meeting Monday, the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners voted 6-1 to appoint Greenan to fill the Road Commission seat vacated in August by Tom Eckerle who resigned under pressure after he was heard making racist comments just before a Road Commission meeting. *** Deering’s Market in Empire has been sold to Frank Lerchen, who owns the adjacent Joe’s Friendly Tavern. Lerchen confirmed the sale Tuesday morning. He said the building is being torn down and a septic tank and drainfield will be put in on the property. “For whatever reason when this place was built, it was put on holding tanks,” he said.
