The following is an excerpt from the Suttons Bay Sesquicentennial Celebration publication, 1854 to 2004.

Because of the swampy terrain, the business section (of the village) was slow in crystallizing. First settlers built the their cabins along the water, on the bank about where the railroad trucks were located. Suttons, Black Pete and Rev. V.H. Helms had cabins there.

Henry Heinz had a grocery and general store on the bank back of Becker’s Automatic Laundry, the former L.E. Bahle residence. This store formed the main wing of the Bahle house after it was moved to its present site and remodeled.
