As the holiday season approaches, many families are preparing to share meals and celebrate together. Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department (BLDHD) reminds everyone to follow important food safety steps to keep gatherings safe and healthy.
Food safety starts with clean hands. Wash with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before preparing or eating food. When cooking, prevent cross-contamination by keeping eggs and raw meat, including poultry and seafood, separate from ready-to-eat foods. Use separate cutting boards and utensils for raw and cooked items. Never place cooked food in a dish or on a plate that previously held uncooked eggs or meat.
“Simple steps like proper handwashing, separating raw and cooked foods, and storing leftovers safely make a big difference,” said Nick Dow, food program coordinator at BLDHD. “With a few good habits, the risk of foodborne illnesses can be reduced significantly.”
