Every morning, with the exception on Sundays, Joy and Jim Ham drive to Northport for their daily walk. Joy, 91, and Jim, 95, have always loved being on the move, and at this time in their life, it’s especially important to them to keep up with their walks and to venture out of the house when they can.

“The walk is critical, we do it first thing in the morning, that’s the way we like to start our day,” Jim said. “It just makes us feel good and we need to get out and move around. It’s good for the mind as well as the body.”

Joy said on their morning walks, they often stop to talk to other people, most they know and some they meet along the way, but having a conversation with someone is part of the reason they enjoy being out as well. With their home of the last 30 plus years not far from Gills Pier, the couple used to walk down their dirt road to the pavement and then to the lake and back as part of their route. They quickly realized that they preferred walking in town though because there were people to encounter and talk to along the way.
