Assessment district discussed for Cherry Homes subdivision

Leelanau Township board trustees discussed creating a special assessment district (SAD) for Cherry Homes subdivision road improvements at its regular meeting last week.

According to Leelanau Township Supervisor Barbara Conley’s November report, residents of Cherry Homes have needed their roads improved for several years. Cherry Homes Shores is a deed-restricted residential single-family community that consists of six subdivisions and is governed by a homeowners’ association known as the Cherry Home Association (CHA). Roads needed for improvements in the Cherry Homes subdivision have a Pavement Surface Evaluation and Rating (PASER) of 1-3, as noted in the August township supervisor report. The county road commission considers roads along a PASER rating of 1-10, and ratings of 1-4 are considered “poor” condition.

The process to make these improvements possible would involve the township passing a resolution of intent to establish a special assessment district (SAD), and would be followed by obtaining a firm estimate of costs and a map of the district boundaries, as well as holding a public hearing.
