G-A Beautification puts down roots

The newly formed Glen Arbor Beautification (GAB) group completed its first official tree planting effort earlier this month, marking the beginning of a long term initiative aimed at earning Glen Arbor a Tree City USA designation from the Arbor Day Foundation.

Twenty blue and white spruce seedlings were planted on the back property of The River Club in Glen Arbor with the enthusiastic support of owner Mike Sheldon, who also attended the planting event alongside members of the River Club management. The spruces were provided by GAB co-founder Rebecca Benedict, who sourced them through the Leelanau Conservation District.

The inaugural tree planting served as GAB’s unofficial Arbor Day celebration. The recognition of Arbor Day is a requirement for the Tree City USA application. While the event was small, organizer and GAB co-founder, Chris Sack said the planting is a symbolic first step in building a lasting culture of stewardship in Glen Arbor.
