The Leland girls basketball team is getting ready for the season ahead, and looking to improve on last season’s success.
“We’ll be learning some new things, and there’s some old things,” coach Megan Munoz said. “Having them all learn and peeking by the end of the season.”
Munoz is in her first year returning as the coach, previously coaching the Comets in the 2013-14 season. She is taking over for Ryan Knudsen, who is now the coach for the boys team.
The Comets finished 17-6 a year ago and Munoz has her four seniors wanting to improve.
“I’m really lucky (Knudsen) left me with a really good, strong base, and I’ve got some super good athletes,” Munoz said. “It’s going to be plugging in some of the old things, but plugging in some new things and we’re really athletic.”
Seniors Hadley Bison, Addison Waskiewicz, Lorna Widsen all want to meet the goal of winning the districts and seeing how far they can go in the playoffs.
“I want to win districts,” Bison said. “I hope we have a strong start, stay consistent, and have a good record like we did last year.”
Senior Ingrid Paciorka has the same mindset but is more focused on winning their first game against St. Mary and growing as a team.
“My main goal is to really work on bonding with my team, I want to form good relationships and make sure we can keep the young girls in the program so we can continue to grow as a team,” Paciorka said. “My favorite memory was last year before our game against Brethren, we all went out to the play set and played a tag game. It was just so much fun, we didn’t have any anxiety about the game, we were just having fun with each other.”
Waskiewicz and Widsen agreed with getting the team to bond together as Widsen said her goal for the season is for everyone to gain confidence and create a great team bonding experience with Waskiewicz bringing up her favorite memory was through team bonding.
“We all dressed up as Mr. Knudsen last year with our bald caps and followed him around the school before our game,” Waskiewicz said.
Leland’s first game is at home against St. Mary December 9th at 7 p.m. before a short road stretch at Frankfort and Brethren to close out 2025.
