During the season of giving, local Lions Club chapters throughout Leelanau County are continuing to serve their communities, giving their time and resources to help others in need.
The Northport Lions Club officially launched its annual Patty DeYoung Holiday Giving Fund this month, which continues a cherished tradition that goes back 16 years of assisting Leelanau County residents during the holiday season. Every year, the club purchases Tom’s and Old Navy gift cards that are distributed to families at the Leelanau County Holiday Program. In addition, the funds are donated to purchase coats, boots, and presents for teenagers as well as to assist local families during the holiday season with other emergency needs.
Marian Kromkowski, current Northport Lions Club president, said the late Patty DeYoung had a great deal of compassion for the community. She said over a decade ago, it was brought to DeYoung’s attention that a young family with a new baby was in need of propane. When DeYoung told the club that they needed to raise money to help the family, club members stepped up and donated $700 that very evening.
