To the editor:
I am a member of the Leelanau Citizens for Safe Sewage and a resident of Centerville Township. My home is within sight of the Eitzen Farm where Williams & Bay is applying septage from our county’s holding tanks. Although a regulated practice, it is not a practice that protects our health or the health of our ecosystems. The odor when they are applying this septage is not from “all the farming operations with cattle around there.” Trust me, it’s human waste.
Leelanau County, we have to do better. It is our responsibility as homeowners to safely have our septic systems emptied regularly by hiring local companies that agree that the risk of contaminating our ecosystem forever is not worth saving “4-5 cents/gallon.”
