Concerned

To the editor:

I don’t live near the holding tank injection site in Centerville Township so I’m not affected by the odors and constant truck traffic caused by this procedure but as a citizen of Centerville Township and by extension Leelanau County, I am concerned abouttheprocess. This is not just spreading manure on a field once a year, but rather constantly injecting holding tank sewage into the ground. This sewage is from human use, which can contain all kinds of pharmaceutical products as well as forever chemicals including the notorious PFAS.

We know that water is the most valuable asset we have in this county. Keeping the groundwater and local lakes clean is critical both for the tourist industry as well as farming and we don’t want to find that our well water has been contaminated as other parts of the state have. (Cadillac) History is replete with examples of discovering contamination after the damage is done (Love Canal or locally the Superfund site in Elmwood). We need to be proactive and support solutions that will prevent contamination before it happens, including working with other local units of government to find a area-wide solution so if it is eliminated from Centerville Township, it won’t just move to an adjoining Township.
