A 28-year-old Traverse City male was arrested Monday after an incident in Cleveland Township.
County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a wooded area off Lake Michigan Drive, to investigate two incidents reported to the county Dispatch Center.
“We had a call about a suspicious male and a report of gunshots in the area,” Undersheriff Jim Kiessel said.
According to the county dispatch blotter, the about 2:30 p.m. a call came into the center reporting someone passing “someone creepy” on the trail with a hood and sunglasses.
The reporting female said that she heard a gun shot close to her and then saw the stranger scurry out of the woods and start running down (the Lake Michigan Trail.)
Deputies responded and saw a gentleman in the woods who appeared to have a handgun on him. Once contact was made, deputies recovered a 9 mm handgun as well as a pair of brass knuckles found in his possession.
It is illegal to possess “metallic knuckles” in the state, a charge, a felony punishable by five years confinement.
“(The suspect) was cooperative,” Kiessel said. “He admitted shooting the gun, but said he was hunting small game.
“We really can’t ascertain what he was up to.”
The man was arrested and charged with three offenses: possession of a firearm, possession of brass knuckles and hunting out of season.
The man’s identity is being withheld pending arraignment.
