Leland defeated Lake Leelanau St. Mary 37-23 Tuesday in their first game of the season, led by a stifling defensive effort.
“We had a great first game. A lot of it was nerves. We got it over with, and we’re ready to go for the rest of the season,” Leland senior Lorna Wiesen said. “Our defense was strong, and we worked well together. We are a defensive team and focused on offense early in the season.”
Leland junior Ariah Amin led with a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds. Wiesen had four points, while the Comets forced 33 steals from the Eagles.
