Wake-up call

To the editor:

The hostile reception given two young disciples in Leland is uncomfortably similar to that received by Jesus 2,000 years ago, and shows that we’re not the welcoming community we pretend to be. Quenching of spiritual thirst for dozens of teenagers in our community should be celebrated, but led by our usual suspect of intolerance we instead try to thwart freedom and demoralize good intention. Jesus clearly warns that children should not be hindered in coming to Him, and that those who reject God will be denied heaven’s entry. For our own sake and each other’s, we should change our tune.
