Two Leelanau County students were honored for essays they submitted to Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7731 in Lake Leelanau for a national contest.
Meridian Parsons, 16, a student at Leland Public School, composed the winning essay for the Voice of Democracy contest. The essay theme is, “How are you showing patriotism?” She was awarded $300 for her effort.
Emmett Kiessel of Lake Leelanau, 13, who is homeschooled, entered the top essay in the Patriot’s Theme contest. He received $200 for addressing the topic, “Patriotism.”
