Homestead steps up to help hurricane victims

Fundraising efforts to assist the Jamaican workers at The Homestead in Glen Arbor whose lives were upended by Hurricane Melissa are ongoing.

To date, a crowdfunding effort led by seasonal residents John and Belynda Hudspeth has raised over $47,000, with a goal of at least $75,000. That is a significant amount to those who have lost so much, though it pales in comparison to the estimated $6 billion in damage the hurricane caused to the island.

Each year the workers leave their families to travel to northern Michigan to live and work, filling essential jobs that help the community and sending the bulk of their earnings back home. They become familiar faces to those who live, visit or work at The Homestead. The Hudspeths, longtime seasonal residents at The Homestead, decided they wanted to do whatever they could to help those they have gotten to know.
