Lake Leelanau St. Mary girls basketball snapped a six game losing streak last night with a win over Traverse City Bulldogs Tuesday.
After ending the half down 11-19, the Eagles quickly tied the game with a 3-point shot from Adrienne Schaub. The Bulldogs weren’t able to get setup before Schaub stole the ball and got the Eagles another two points. The rest of the half was a nail biting back-and-forth with the teams keeping the score tight. With one minute left St. Mary forward Elizabeth Grant, sank an easy two-pointer, quickly followed up by Schaub with a corner three which pulled them ahead 41-39. In the last seconds of the game the Bulldogs scored on a free throw but weren’t able to pull any farther ahead, leaving the final score at 41-40 and the St. Mary Eagles walking away with their first victory of the season. “They have been working really hard to get a win,” said St. Mary Coach Anya Tondreau. “We’ve been working on our defense a lot in practice and I was proud of how they applied that in the game tonight.” Tondreau went on to praise her player’s offensive teamwork as well, crediting it with their ability to play their highest scoring game of the season. “I am so proud of how they all played, and I’m looking forward to watching them continue to grow throughout the rest of the season.”
