Group works to provide free events, activities in town

A group with the mission to develop and provide free community focused activities to residents of the Village of Northport and Leelanau Township now has its official nonprofit status as of November.

The group, “Northport Community Events,” is currently made up of three Northport residents, Erin Connolly and Elizabeth and Josh Rutila, with two more members being recruited. While they did not get their official 501c3 status until November, a group of community members in Northport and Leelanau Township first gathered in the winter of 2024 with the goal to bring back the popular winter carnival. Connolly said the carnival is a beloved tradition in Northport that was greatly missed and served as a bright spot in the long winter.
