To the editor:
Driving through Suttons Bay on a Saturday we were startled to see scores of elderly people waving signs. “What are they doing?”, my friend asked. “Well”, I replied, “I think it’s the ongoing collective temper tantrum from November 4, 2024 when they didn’t get their way in the election. First came the ‘No Kings’ nonsense and now they rally in support of known murderers, rapists, child molesters, human and drug traffickers, you know, the worst foreign criminals among the 10-20 million unvetted illegals ushered into the US by Biden’s lawless administration.” “But that’s CRAZY!”, he cried. “Of course it is, since many innocent Americans have been raped, murdered, or killed in road accidents as a result. But then, if President Trump saved drowning children from sharks, they’d protest that he starves sharks!”
I then related how my Norwegian grandfather Anders emigrated to Leelanau from Norway in 1890, doubtless attracted by the rocky soil and long cold winters. And how he was thoroughly vetted medically against communicable diseases; and legally to ensure that he wasn’t a Norwegian convict, and that he would not become a ward of the state. (Benjamin Harrison didn’t violate the immigration laws by just waving him in) Had he failed those tests he would have gone home to Trondheim at shipowner’s expense. “But why do democrats resist law and order and the rule of law, the cornerstones of any civil society, ” he further exclaimed. “Ask them”, I replied, “It’s a mystery to me.
