Lake Leelanau St. Mary girls basketball pulled away in the second half to secure a 40-35 win over
Suttons Bay Norse, fueled by strong defense.
“They worked together as a team. We had some seventh graders play up with us today, and they did a phenomenal job stepping up and working hard. Each and every one of them kept their composure throughout the entire game, and that’s how you get a win,” Lake Leelanau St. Mary coach Anya Tondreau said.
The first half was a close battle, with the Eagles holding a slim 15-13 advantage. LLSM began
pulling away in the third quarter, entering the fourth leading 30-26, and closed the game at
40-35 for the win.
The Eagles offensive attack was led by Mackenzie Schuab, who scored 19 points. Clare Couturier added nine points, Birdget Kohler contributed seven, while Lizzy Grant and Kiah Orth scored combined for five points.
“We really worked on keeping our head strong and playing smart basketball,” Tondreau said.
Suttons Bay stayed competitive through three quarters with Bella Wilson leading scoring with 13
points and Aubri Carson adding eight more.
Despite a competitive effort, the Norse couldn’t close the gap in the second half.
“It’s just one game,” Suttons Bay coach Jordan Anderson said. “I know this is our crosstown
rival, but they’ve been making such improvements. They played their butts off, and we have a lot more than we showed.”
