Glen Lake girls basketball earned a share of the Northwest Conference championship as the Lakers defeated Leland Friday, before falling to Buckley Tuesday, 49-36.
“This conference was tough this year,” Lakers coach Brad Fosmore said. “It was just every night you had to be ready to play, I’m very proud of the girls for that.”
The Bears and Lakers both share the conference championship after splitting the regular season series.
Buckley got out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first and despite a back and forth second quarter with Several lead changes, the Bears pulled away in the third quarter, allowing only five points and never allowing Glen Lake within 10 points.
“They played with a lot of intensity and we didn’t match it tonight,” Fosmore said. “It was unfortunate but a great season in the conference for us.”
The Lakers offense was led by junior Lydia Fosmore and senior Grace Noonan, who scored 13 points each. Glen Lake sophomore Delanie Dembowske had five points, while Nora Ciolek and Avery Flores added two points.
Buckley was led by senior Kayla Milarch with 16 points, followed by senior Maddie Chilson with 11 points, and junior Lucy Moyer with 10 points, 8 rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Buckley junior Mikayla Kulawiak added another eight points for the Bears to go along with six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
For the first time since 2003, Buckley girls basketball has won a share of a conference championship after defeating Glen Lake 49-36 Tuesday.
Back then, the Bears were in the Cherryland Conference, and now Buckley (17-4, 11-2 NWC) split the NWC title with Glen Lake (15-6, 11-2 NWC).
Glen Lake earned a share of the NWC conference championship with a win over Leland Friday 47-33.
Glen Lake defeated Buckley in the first match-up of the season, 58-49.
Buckley travels to Ellsworth Thursday to finish the regular season, while the Lakers take on Harbor Springs at home at 7 p.m.
Buckley will travel to Bellaire and will play the winner of Traverse City Christian and Grand Traverse Academy Wednesday in the district tournament.
Glen Lake will play the winner of Benzie Central and Manistee Wednesday.
