Bill would cut ICE operations

With some Michigan counties having cooperation agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, state lawmakers have introduced bills to reduce federal immigration enforcement operations in the state.

Since 2025, sheriffs’ departments in a number of counties — including Allegan, Barry, Calhoun, Jackson, Kalamazoo and Muskegon — have entered 287(g) agreements with ICE, according to the ICE website.

These partnerships allow local officers to perform limited immigration enforcement functions, such as interviewing, identifying and processing individuals suspected of being in the country illegally, according to ICE’s website.
