Ticked off

To the editor:

Leelanau Ticker failed to verify before printing Northport Dam story.

Original Northport Dam was built circa 1855 (not “1935”) to create a log pond during the short lived logging era. The present dam was built in 1935 without authorized regulation. The fish stocked once a year for the spring fishing event are not “brook trout” but is a highly domesticated, nonbreeding rainbow that is raised in a private hatchery on pellet food. These non-wild fish eventually die. Northport Creek has not been stocked with brook trout since before 1972. (DNR) Ticker: “The pond is a recreational site for many residents.” Baloney! How many times did you go to the “pond” last year for recreation or a family picnic? Everyone realizes that “many” residents and visitors alike, use our 3 exceptional waterfront parks within the Village on beautiful Northport Bay.
