Leelanau Montessori Public School Academy is more than half way towards its “Rooted in the Future Campaign” goal of raising $150,000 to preserve and continue Montessori education, having raised more than $98,000 as of Feb. 25.
The public phase of the fundraising campaign for the public charter school launched on Feb. 17 following several weeks of preparation and early outreach efforts that secured an initial $65,000 in gifts.
Anita Abbott, Leelanau Montessori board president, said in an email that they are encouraged by the strong early response and the community’s commitment to sustaining public Montessori education in Leelanau. The school has provided hundreds of families in the county with a tuition-free K-6 public Montessori education for the over 25 years it’s been in operation. Montessori, a child-centered method of education, allows for “an individually based curriculum that aids the whole child to develop skills for life.”
