Leland Township’s parks and recreation committee is looking to work with more community members going forward as it aims to better organize its priorities and responsibilities in the coming months.
Greg Kuntz, Leland Township trustee and the board representative for the parks and recreation committee, reported at the township board’s regular meeting Monday that the most critical things happening within the committee are current and upcoming vacancies. With two committee members’ terms, including Tim Zywicki and Leslie Maclin, set to expire this summer, as well as the resignation of another member, Justin Acker, last month, Kuntz and fellow member Lauren Cypher would be all that’s left.
Kuntz, who has been involved with the committee for about eight months, said because they’re looking for volunteers, he proposed at the last parks and rec meeting that they consider a “working committee” rather than an advisory one. Noting that parks and rec has a limited budget to work with, Kuntz said people are feeling like they’re not being heard, so offered the idea of a group that has an “active chairmanship” to help lead. For example, a finance arm, Kuntz explained, would assess costs of proposals that they receive and might manage fundraising activities and help seek monetary donations from organizations.
