County drain commissioner resigns

Leelanau County will be searching for a new drain commissioner after Timothy O’Non submitted his resignation letter Monday, effective March 20.

“It has been an honor to serve the residents of Leelanau County and to work alongside the Board in this capacity. This decision was not an easy one to make. In the past year, the family business required more time than I was able to give it. And this coming year will require even more time. Financially, that untenable situation means I cannot afford to continue in this role and must step down at this time,” O’Non said in a resignation letter at the county board meeting Tuesday. “Again, I am honored to have had the opportunity to serve the public in this capacity and am willing to assist in the transition of this role’s responsibilities.”

Leelanau County Administrator Jim Dyer emphasized the need for the board to act quickly. But Dyer needs to consult with an attorney to determine whether the board can appoint another drain commissioner, who is an elected position.
