Life on Grand Traverse Bay at the turn of the century

The following news story and photos were taken from Kathleen Firestone’s book, “Suttons Bay, Peshawbestown and Bingham Shores of Grand Traverse Bay.”

The first motor launch to be used in Suttons Bay waters was tied at the obsolete Deuster dock, across the creek and just north of the Leo mill. John Deuster, II, had traded three horses to Barney Anderson of Traverse City, for the gasoline launch with inboard motor. The exterior was painted white and the interior was varnish.

••• The steamer Onekama was replaced by the 85-foot Crescent in 1900. Crescent had been topping previously in 1874 and ‘75. On the new run, Crescent picked up agricultural products in Suttons Bay and Bingham throughout the growing season. Captain Young and Captain George Johnson were two of Crescent’s commanders, greeting passengers and taking on cargo. Captain Johnson would become well known for service on Lake Michigan, and at Duluth.
