Leland girls basketball (7-3) has been on a tear over the past week with three wins.
The Comets started by defeating Grand Traverse Academy 60-35 on January 17.
The Comets dominated on both ends of the court all night long as Leland senior Mallory Lowe led with 27 points, 11 steals, and five rebounds.
“We were very active defensively and did a really good job of applying pressure on defense and playing the passing lanes in the first half which allowed us to get a lot of steals and get out into transition to create some easy scoring opportunities. In the second half of the game I was very happy with our half court execution and I thought it was a great game overall for us. We have continued to get positive contributions from every- one on the team,” Leland coach Ryan Knudsen said.
The Comets jumped out to a 26-11 lead and never looked back as they went into halftime up 43-15.
Leland juniors Ella Knudsen and Elli Miller provided assistance. Knudsen managed 13 points, seven rebounds, four steals, while Miller scored nine points, four rebounds, four steals, three assists. Other Comets to contribute were Kally Sluiter with five points, eight rebounds, and Lorna Wiesen had four assists, four steals.
On Friday night, Leland dominated Cadillac Heritage Christian 58-26.
“After a few games with slow starts this season, we have really been focusing as a team on executing our offense and defense and getting out to a faster start in games, and this past week in our games we have done much better,” Knudsen said. “We have the ability to be a disruptive defensive team with the potential to have some bursts on the offensive side of the court, and as we continue to improve in those areas we are looking forward to the second half of the season,” Knudsen said.
The Comets went into the half up 37-8 before coasting to the finish. Leland senior Mallory Lowe exploded once again with 34 points and 12 steals.
Miller had 9 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals; Knudsen 6 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals; Wiesen 6 points, 6 rebounds.
Leland finished its streaky week on Monday when the Comets defeated Interlochen Arts Academy 53-13. Lowe led once again with 13 points on the night.
