The following is an excerpt from “A History of Leelanau Township” published by the Leelanau Township Historical Writer Group.

In 1849 the schooner “ Merrill” carrying Rev. George Smith and family arrived in Northport harbor. With them was Jame McLaughlin as government farmer to the Waukazoo band of 50 Ottawa Indians.

In 1851 Deacon Joseph Dame arrived. He began construction of the first dock. It was large enough to handle propeller boats. In 1858, 15,000 cords of wood were sold to these steamers as fuel.
