Archives shine light on history

Bark peelers’ wanted on North Manitou island, $1.75 per cord. Mailboat crosses to Island Mondays and Thursdays.

S.R. Boardman — from the July 3, 1890, Leelanau Enterprise *** Manitou county will not get any more mail until Lake Michigan freezes and the carriers can make the trips with their dogsleds across the ice. The people on these islands are off the earth six months yearly... Manitou county gets two mails a week regularly. The mail goes across to the North Manitou from here and from Glen Arbor to the South Manitou and it gets there too.

— From the November 6, 1890, Leelanau Enterprise *** Frank J. Wilmes a wholesale liquor dealer and J.A. Bauman a wholesale cigar manufacturer of Grand Rapids were in town Tuesday. These gentlemen speak very highly of our pleasant village.
