Local paper owners: Detzers … Dickinsons

Local paper owners: Detzers … Dickinsons
Karl Detzer, Army officer during both world wars, retired from the military as a lieutenant colonel. He and his wife, Clarice, owned the Enterprise from 1948- to 1951. He is shown here in uniform during the Leland July 4 parade. Enterprise file photo

For a relatively short time, the Leelanau Enterprise was published by a swashbuckling, nationally recognized author, screenwriter and, for all practical purposes, celebrity.

Karl and Clarice Detzer purchased the Enterprise in March, 1948, from Frederick and Julia Dickinson of Glen Lake. Julia Dickinson was known throughout the county for her “Leelanau Lookout” column that ran on the front page of the Enterprise, and she continued as a community correspondent for the Glen Lake area after the Detzers bought the newspaper.

Neither the Detzers nor the Dickinsons could be called typical newspaper publishers because of their outside pursuits. Fred Dickinson was an artist whose retouched postcards and photographs were heaped with praise and have become keepsakes. The Dickinsons sold the Enterprise at least partially to free up time for Fred to spend more time with his artwork.
