— Jan. 20, 1898 *** The new postal laws are such that newspapers can arrest anyone for fraud who takes a paper and refuses to pay for it. Under this law the man who allows his subscription to run along for some time unpaid and then orders it discontinued, or orders the postmaster to mark it refused ... leaves himself liable to arrest and fine. Attention is called to this law because there are a few people who have done just that ... They are on a par with the man who finds it more convenient to move than pay rent. — July 25, 1901, Leelanau Enterprise. *** Marshall Farrant was killed in an accident near Burdickville early last Friday morning. He was hauling logs from the camp to Glen Lake for D.H. Day and was on his first trip of the day. As the sled was going down a slight incline the top log, a peeled hemlock, slid off between the horses, carrying Mr. Farrant with it, the sled with its load passing over him, crushing his life out and badly mangling the body. It is not known how long the man was on the ground but when the next teamster came along he discovered the accident.
