The Leelanau Township board unanimously approved engineering plans for Cherry Home Shores Roads at a cost of $59,574 at its regular meeting on March 10. The township asked the Leelanau County Road Commission (LCRC) to obtain bids to prepare a preliminary design and itemized cost estimate for the project, and after receiving two bids, selected KPM Engineering to perform this work.
According to the township’s resolution for engineering plans for Cherry Homes Shores, KPM Engineering “should also include recommendations for traffic quieting under their miscellaneous services,” as well as make it clear within the cost estimate who will provide services during construction, either the county road commission or a contractor. In addition, the resolution states it should be clear that the township will not need anything beyond base plans and cost estimates if the SAD (special assessment district) is not approved.
The board has discussed the need for road improvements at Cherry Homes Shores since last year, previously noting that Cherry Home residents have urged for repairs for the past several years. In November, the board also discussed the idea of creating a SAD for the Cherry Homes subdivision. Roads needed for improvements in the Cherry Homes subdivision have a Pavement Surface Evaluation and Rating (PASER) of 1-3. The county road commission considers roads along a PASER rating of 1-10, and ratings of 1-4 are considered in “poor” condition. The road commission also previously estimated the Cherry Homes repaving project to cost about $2.87 million, however, it could be less, but a set cost has yet to be determined.
