After 35 years, 82-year-old track coach Jim Harrelson has decided to retire.
Harrelson was undecided as the new year rolled around, but a cancer diagnosis in mid-January and the resulting treatment plans made it unfeasible to continue.
“I wanted to get it across, especially with my grandkids and my kids, that I’m ok with this. Even if this goes bad for me. Everything’s going to be okay,” Harrelson said. “What I’m experiencing to a degree, everybody at some point is going to experience it; it may be only for 10 minutes as they lie on a deathbed.”
