Park improvements eye’d by county

A $200,000 grant to install new playground equipment at Myles Kimmerly Park has been endorsed by county commissioners.

The board voted unanimously during a rescheduled public hearing, March 19, to support a grant application to replace equipment at the park, located west of Maple City on Co. Rd. 616.

The grant proposal, recommended by the county Parks and Recreation Commission, is for improvements to the 107acre park.

“The existing playground no longer meets modern accessibility standards, limiting use for individuals with disabilities — an increasing need in the county with an aging population,” according to an executive summary provided to commissioners. “The project will replace the outdated playground with a fully inclusive, universally accessible facility, featuring ADA-compliant pathways, parking, and play equipment designed for all abilities.”

As proposed improvements would occur within the existing developed area, minimizing environmental impact while enhancing safety and access. Sustainable features, including native plantings, a pollination garden, and solar lighting, would further support resource protection.

Last year, improvements were completed at the county park, which also serves as the site of youth soccer contests, included updating the disc golf course.

Plans for the project were prepared by MCSA Group, Inc. of East Grand Rapids. Work is expected to begin this spring on improvements to the county park.

The grant, from the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, will require a $200,000 matching grant from the county.

MCSA also prepared plans for improvements at Veronica Valley County Park which would include a looped trail, construction of a pavilion and replacement and installation of a ADA compliant ramp and stairs.

Cost of the pavilion, estimated at $50,000, could come from a 2% request to the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians endorsed by commissioners last month.

Another request would help fund planned improvements at Old Settlers County Park (OSCP) on the shore of Big Glen Lake. The historical site of the century-old Old Settlers Picnic.

The roof of the park gazebo was replaced late last year. Another 2% grant is sought to help with replacement and installation of an ADA ramp, stairs, and ADA dock at OSP.

The price tag for this project is estimated at $80,000.

In other park business the board approved the purchase of nine benches for Veronica Valley. Cost of the parks came in at $12,150.
