New forester supports Leelanau’s woodlands, landowners

The Leelanau Conservation District (LCD) is pleased to welcome Jacob Bournay as the new District Forester, who began his role in January. His addition strengthens the District’s ongoing commitment to supporting landowners, caring for forest resources, and advancing conservation across the county.

Originally from Michigan’s southwest corner, Bournay’s connection to the woods began early. He recalls time spent with his grandfather on a Christmas tree farm, learning to split firewood and fell his first tree. That early exposure, along with formative experiences working outdoors and studying forestry at Michigan State University, set the course for his career.

“I’ve always loved the woods,” Bournay said. “Being around people who were passionate about natural resources helped solidify that this was the right path for me.”
