The Leelanau County Jail could very well accommodate even fewer inmates than it currently does as the result of a little- noticed package of new criminal justice laws passed by the Michigan Legislature during the lame duck session late last year. The reforms received strong bipartisan support and were signed into law by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer earlier this year. *** A newly-published study of deep water temperatures in Lake Michigan is giving scientists more evidence that winters are getting shorter and summers longer — with untold consequences for places like the Leelanau peninsula which is literally surrounded by Lake Michigan. Researchers from the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL), which is part of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), released a study last month that is breaking new ground in climate science.
