Calcium carbide removed from Leland residence

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Leland Township Fire Department, fielded a call regarding six 250-pound drums of calcium carbide on private property.

“The EPA cleared the scene Friday, March 27. The EPA sent a mitigation team from Chicago, while taking care of the situation and transferring the drums,” Leland Township Fire Department Chief Dan Besson said. “The EPA uses different maneuvers and procedures and couldn’t use any old shovel as there was a risk of causing a spark. Special equipment had to be brought in to secure (the chemicals). We are waiting for transport to an incinerator .”

The noted residential property was located near Stander Marine next to the Leland River.
